thank you for the university of maryland for hosting us today. it is a recognition that the difference -- the difference of wise or unwise fiscal policies will make for the future of our country. and the people who live in it. i'm going to start by just doing a little budget 101 to give you an idea of where the budget is today. and what are some of the demographic and healthcare challenges that face the budget. and then others will look at where we're projected forward and then hopefully we can get into a good talk of solutions, what we do about it. so the first thing to recognize about the federal budget is that this year we're going to run a very big budget deficit. somewhere around 1.25 trillion or a little bit more. one thing i would note about the deficit just on the spending side of this chart is the amount of net interest. at slightly over $200 billion. that's quite a bit. that's the interest that the government pays on the debt. on its borrowing. to give you some perspective, it's considerably more than we're spending on the wars in iraq

in maryland it's 16,000 families. they need our help in order to be able to pay for their -- feed their families, pay the rent and utilities on their home and keep their houses literally out of foreclosure. i hear from heads of households every day who are trying to find work, but the jobs just aren't there. in fact, the labor department statistics tells us that for every job opening, there are five individuals actively seeking employment. those odds aren't very good for someone who is trying to find employment today, and that's why we have the long-term unemployment. that's why we need to extend the unemployment insurance benefits to those who are in need today. we are emerging for the most severe prolonged economic downturn since the great depression. for those of my colleagues who are insisting that unemployment compensation extensions be paid for, i would point out that for every $1 we spend in unemployment compensation, we are generating more than $1.5 back into our economy. in other words, this is a stimulus. th

joining me now, maryland democratic congressman, elijah cummin cummings. we have unemployment numbers coming out tomorrow, and historically the rate in the minority communities have bench higher, and many of your constituencies are facing a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the country. what are you expecting tomorrow? perhaps there has been some improvement because of temporary hiring for the census takers, but what are you feeling back home now? >> well, sitting on the joint economic committee, i do expect the numbers are going to be better tomorrow. but what i am hearing is that people are elated -- when i say that, they are extremely happy. i represent a diverse bank. -- area. and they told me stories where they treat poor kids and they tell me a lot of these kids were being -- some of them were being thrown off of their policies or whatever because of a preexisting condition that was found while they were treating them for some severe dental problem. a lot of people happy about that, and people want to go back to work. on the last report with
